Antimicrobial resistance is a growing global concern. It is estimated that by 2050, there could be up to 10 million deaths and a global cost of up to £66 million unless action is taken.1 Without antibiotics, it would be difficult to treat everyday infections, and many routine treatments such basic operations, transplants and chemotherapy could become increasingly dangerous. How can this worrying phenomenon be prevented?
